Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement, Inc. subscribes to the “Basic Guidelines for Operating an Equine Rescue or Retirement Facility” laid down jointly by the Doris Day Animal League and the Animal Welfare Institute.  MFER, Inc. also subscribes to the AAEP Care Guidelines for Rescue and Retirement Facilities.

Mitchell Farm At A Glance

           Founded in August of 2004

           Received IRS 501(C )3 status September 28, 2005

           Currently caring for 24 retired horses with over 58 horses on the waiting list

           16 stalls in main barn

           4 stalls in shed row barn donated in August of 2006

           5 stalls outside against main barn for horses with heaves, allergies, or other breathing disorders

           50 acres of fenced pasture

           Total operating budget for 2008 was $124,830.  2009  is $121, 600.

           Awarded the Connecticut Horse Farm of Environmental Distinction by H.E.A.P. (The Horse Environmental Awareness Program)

           Founder~Executive Director Dee Doolittle received the Doris Day Animal Foundation Animal Kingdom Kindred Spirit Award in 2005

           Awarded grants totaling $9000 from the Thoroughbred Charities of America in Since 2006

           Awarded grants totaling $20,000 from the Edgard & Geraldine Feder Family Foundation

since 2006
